Here you will find me trying to describe what I am about (as the title of this page suggests). To explain what motivates and inspires me to stand alone in a room for hours at a time, applying small smears of oil paint, to cover the surface of a stretched canvas. One possible reflection on my motives could be that by doing so, I am revealing my - self. With each new work, I endeavor to express fresh ways to represent ideas about relationships and connections with my environment; the inside thoughts combined with outside influences. Each artwork attempt’s to articulate an observation that has struck me as somehow worthy of further thought. I don't believe that art is about discovering 'truth' as the word truth implies universality or a collective rule. I think that being true to my environmental influences is to endeavor to be ‘honest’ about how I perceive my world. The word ‘honest’ holds connotations of subjectivity, allowing the viewer to perceive that my honest attempts may not be anything more than personal expression. What matters is that the initial mental idea, made physical by painting, is then transformed once again into thought by the viewer. In the fulfillment of this process the artwork develops, alters and, if the artwork has a pulse ... lives.

The Percy Thomson Gallery is Stratford's public art gallery and was opened in June 2002. The gallery contains both exhibition areas and work areas for use by local artists and community art groups. The gallery provides an active programme of exhibitions and events that is both internally generated and toured from other art collections. New exhibitions are started every three to four weeks. Exhibitions vary between national, local and regional artists - established and emerging.

The Remuera Gallery

Now under the ownership of Scott Dargaville, the gallery continues to support a host of renowned and established New Zealand Artists.
We are a people orientated gallery; our aim is to make people feel comfortable as well as being a place of learning and art appreciation.
We bring together a wide range of skills with 20 years experience in the Fine Art and Framing industry.
The Gallery offers an eclectic collection of paintings from Abstract to Traditional. As well as sculpture, glass and ceramics.
Selective exhibitions through out the year show cases a body of work by a particular artist and in between exhibitions we exhibit work from our stock room.
