the Beach
Beach works have formed an ongoing practice; that of exploring the space in between ~ the non-area. That evolving and changing transitional space where the land meets the sea is a general, nonspecific location; a stage. And upon this platform the figures are caught in contemplation or decision, between living in the moment and the possibilities of the future.

A couple enjoying a moment together, but the moment is passing; the tide is approaching, the shadows are growing long and there are kids toys strewn about, but where are the children? This painting was a response to the addition of my children into my relationship, It's about recognizing those fleeting moments when you can re-connect again, away from the distractions of modern living. The seagulls circle overhead; freedoms lost.

the Bach

I think of this painting as my bach - with grand illusions. When we recently revisited our old family bach in Ngunguru, Northland, I was saddened to see that its position had been usurped by a new building while the bach had been moved to the back of the section to serve as a storage shed. For this artwork, I decided to reinstate the bach from its present condition, to a prime beachfront location.

Sitting Pretty

This painting is part of an ongoing beach series exploring the enjoyment of life’s simple pleasures. The heightened feeling of tension with the perceived movement in the trees, by strong winds, is released by the stationary washing hanging on the line. The title refers to the location as a perfect spot to stay and relax.
