Man of Steel
Exhibited: Oilskin Armour, oil on steel with laser-cut corten steel, 2007, sold
The coat is laser-cut corten steel (also called weathered steel). This steel is often used to make shipping containers as when it oxidizes it creates a protective oxide film on the metals surface, this slows down any future corrosion underneath. This self portrait is another work along the theme of self protection against scrutiny or intrusion. The rusting of the coat creates a tarnished look, mimicking an old well-worn coat.
