Displayed here are artworks fresh from the studio and going back many years. As a new work is completed, it's added (see new work via the filter: New Artworks).

These original oil paintings depict islands in the Pacific Ocean as well as surround seas in a whimsical surreal environment that allows the viewer entry into an alternative narrative of our lived experience.

When New Zealand was first sighted and a “Landfall” was made, along with the influx of humans came a diverse menagerie of other creatures and clippings - most at odds with the local inhabitants. This painting is based upon the masterpiece titled ‘Washington Crossing the Delaware’ by Emanuel Leutze. The Battlelines series has some further writing about this painting

Landfall

Exhibited: PAPER, 100 x 70cm, mixed media on watercolour paper, 2019, sold

Endless sheep for a good night's sleep? The painting was created and constructed in such a way that if you combined another painting, exactly the same as this one (as in a diptych), the sheep would carry on across the canvas unfalteringly.. and so to for a triptych, or four, five etc. An endless frieze of sheep (for a good night's sleep!)

Lambscape

110 x 91 cm, oil on linen, 2008, sold

Cecil Peak looms over a small cottage on Lake Wakatipu. A mountain bike flies like a Kereru as the sun raises upon a new day

Taken from a classic tv series (Star Trek) and spun to fit my own narrative. Beaming down to a new world we find that 'we' are the locals and the crew of the enterprize and the invaders.

Landing Party (the)

Exhibited: PAPER, 100 x 70cm, mixed media on watercolour paper, 2019, sold

An exercise in blending a solid colour into the background grey, this is an early painting of a farming scene where a lone farmer with his prodding stick, follow behind his herd of Friesian cows on a misty morning. The painting Morning Drove has a similar theme.

Landscape in Grey

152 x 76 cm, oil on canvas, 2006, sold

A commission where I was interested in capturing the light at the end of the day. The full sun still lingers upon the top house while the base of the island has relinquished the light and fallen to shadow.

Last Light

66 x 84 cm, oil on canvas, 2018, commission

Leanne is a powerful force in my life, she is my wife and she is my muse. Creating a portrait can be a hazardous occupation, the natural movements of your hand and eye transfer to the possibility of features being too big or small and a loss of the likeness, and maybe also the client. So, I was taking my life in my hands when I asked my wife to pose for me...

Leanne

40 x 60 cm, oil on linen, 2015, artist collection

A farmer stands in the doorway of his shed, and loads his gun. Farm life can be a harsh reality for the animals and there is much that needs attending to in a farmers daily life. View 'Worn' or 'Calloused Veneer' for similar artworks

Line Between Black & White

Exhibited: Calloused Veneer, 95 x 95 cm, oil on board, 2004, sold

One of our worst offenders was bought here as an industry - I have humanised the little fellow

Little Possum

30 x 30 cm, oil on board with handcrafted frame, 2016, sold

One of a triptych of paintings exploring the care and preparation of an animal as a source of food. Each one is of an animal that is both nurtured and then killed and prepared as food. The act of killing is displayed; a fish out of water, a knife to kill the pig (Little Swine) and a hand to wring the chicken's neck (Foul Deed) - I also added ominous sounding playful titles to elaborate upon the threat

Little Swine

Exhibited: Hunters & Consumers, 91 x 91 cm, oil on linen, 2007, sold

A forgotten church in a state of disrepair surrounded by a flock of sheep who have lost their way and are indiscriminately wandering aimlessly around its perimeter. Tongue firmly in cheek! For more rural sheep view ‘The Flock’

Lost Flock

91 x 91 cm, oil on canvas, 2007, sold

Painting depicting the introduced ivy creeper entirely covering the image, within the work are hidden native animals and they are also bisected by an abstract circle. The painting was designed so that it might be hung from any side which, depending upon which side is chosen, brings focus upon different birds. View ‘Cat and Mouse’ for a similar theme

Lost and Found

Exhibited: T.E.N.T, 112 x 112 cm, oil on canvas, 2021, sold

An enduring painting about individual personality at a stock market as told from their gumboots alone.

Lot 18

Exhibited: Calloused Veneer, 149 x 34 cm, oil on board, 2004, sold

In John Singer Sargent's original painting titled ‘The portrait of Madame X’ (which this one is based upon), the strap was painted as though it had fallen down onto her arm - but was repositioned onto her shoulder as it was considered too provocative. The art world is full of nude people and I've always felt it interesting... the line between a naked body and a nude one. For this portrait of my wife I re-re positioned the strap.

Madame Gen X

Exhibited: Oil & Water, 60 x 78 cm, oil on board, 2016, sold

The coat is laser-cut corten steel (also called weathered steel). This steel is often used to make shipping containers as when it oxidizes it creates a protective oxide film on the metals surface, this slows down any future corrosion underneath. This self portrait is another work along the theme of self protection against scrutiny or intrusion. The rusting of the coat creates a tarnished look, mimicking an old well-worn coat.

Man of Steel

Exhibited: Oilskin Armour, oil on steel with laser-cut corten steel, 2007, sold

A commission of a concrete villa in Mt Eden. At the time I was interested in expressing the turning between day and night and capturing the difference in the objects between the top and bottom of the painting.

The Manor

A poke at the typical male and the quirky expressions and local lingo that constitutes Kiwi identity.

The Measure of a Man

Exhibited: The Popup Show, 60 x 91 cm, oil on canvas (with digital additions), 2013, sold

A self portrait paying homage to the artists that instructed me in my practice by studying theirs and the masterpiece creations they produced. The concept is a paint by numbers, with the numbers being substituted by the name of an artist that I admire. The title describes the process of learning from studying the works of contemporary artists as well as the great artists of history.

The Masters Apprentice

70 x 70cm, oil on board, 2012, artist's collection

A painted cloning of the same image with an added sense of perspective applied by reducing the size of the cow image into the distance. This work speaks of the commercialisation of animals as a meat source.

Meat Pack
